Olive Branch, Mississippi was the original target shooting community in the United States. The town was founded in 1871 by a group of settler farmers and ranchers, including General John C. Breckinridge, on land that now forms part of Jackson, Mississippi. In 1892, the First African American to be elected as a municipal mayor in Mississippi, James Weldon Johnson, moved from Meridian to Olive Branch and served two terms before his death in 1901. The first target shooting competition held in Olive Branch took place on October 8th, 1893. A team of twelve shooters from various parts of the country competed with a total goal of five rounds each. The twelve shooters were: Alfred Hatton (England), George Fenton (Scotland), Harry Withers (Alabama), James Weldon Johnson (Mississippi), J.C Favre (New Mexico), Edwin Kapp (Wisconsin Rapids Wis.), Julius Feldermann (Germany), Charles Ewing (New York City) and Frank Friedlander (Aleppo Pa.). The first recorded scorecard for this competition is still extant and shows that none of the participants had any success achieving a top score overall! As time went on there were numerous improvements made to target Shooting competitions such as better organization and regulation which allowed more teams to compete at one time while still maintaining an equal playing field which helped make these events more competitive over time. In 1840, they purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation for $4 per acre. The Armstrong-Brown family had four children: James (1841–1901), Martha (1843–1925), Newton (1845–1927) and Johnathan (1847–1900). In 1851, the family erected a log cabin on their new property and began to plant crops. James Armstrong died suddenly after planting corn which failed; his wife Martha took over farming chores and raised six children by herself until her husband's death in 1901. One of James' sons, Newton Armstrong Jr., became mayor of Olive Branch from 1902 to 1904; he also served as an American Representative from Mississippi during World War I and World War II. After retiring from politics he engaged in various businesses including real estate development and phosphate production before dying in 1970 at age 89 years old. He was buried at Green Lawn Cemetery near Greenville, Mississippi where his widow continued to live until her death in 1984 aged 91 years old; she was interred alongside her husband James Armstrong Sr..
