By 1830, African Americans were living in a small community near what is now downtown Olive Branch. However, due to the constant skirmishes between slaveholders and their slaves, few black people lived in this area for more than a decade. In 1853, a group of freedmen from Meridian County settled in the area around present day Olive Branch. This group was known as the Meridian colony. The colony grew slowly because it lacked resources and support from local officials. In 1865, after years of struggle, the Meridian colony officially became an incorporated town under the name of Olive Branch. The expansion of Olive Branch continued through Reconstruction period when African American residents were allowed to return to their homes and businesses (although some remained segregated). Reconstruction ended with the end of World War II and new racial policies led to increased segregation throughout Mississippi.

On November 30th of that year, General Andrew Jackson issued an order authorizing sale of all public lands within twenty miles (32 kilometers) of Jackson for speculation purposes only without any water or transportation privileges attached--an event which has been called "the greatest sale ever made by the United States Government." That same year Captain Caldwell sold eighty acres (40 hectares)of land east side of town between High School and State Streets to Wm Bynum for $1 per acre (4¢ per foot). Lieutenant Colonel Jno Ewing phoned Mr Bynum early Sunday morning October 20th 1830asking if he could buy lots adjacent to where he residedhe then offered John Gorman Lot 5 feet wide & 3 feet deep containing 100 acres & part thereof still stands today just southside High School Rd some 50 yards west from original landing site
