When cotton became available to be harvested in greater numbers after the American Civil War, farmers started planting it here and other areas of Rankin County. In 1875, a post office was established in Olive Branch and mail service continued until 1919. A railroad station was built there in 1896 and served as a transportation hub for many years. The population declined during World War II as a result of military production being concentrated elsewhere; however, some new housing began to be built in Olive Branch beginning in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The economy has been diversified since then; among others, olive oil processing has become an important facet of its economy. There are also several small businesses involved in agriculture (including corn farming), manufacturing (particularly machinery sales), education (including two high schools), and local services such as grocery store operations or taxi service. In recent years, Olive Branch has seen an increase in development activity with homes becoming available for purchase as well as more commercial space within walking distance of most residents

Olive Branch is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General Andrew Jackson on November 3, 1819 as a trading post on the Yazoo River. The post was renamed Olive Branch in honor of his mother and wife. Although not much is known about early life in Olive Branch, it is evident that the town had an important role in Jackson history due to its location and importance as a transportation hub for goods betweenJackson and Memphis. Olive Branch first saw action during the American Civil War when Confederate forces besieged it from December 12-January 1, 1864. After Union troops destroyed most of Confederate munitions storage in nearby Tupelo Junction, Olive Branch became an important strategic military station supplying supplies to Confederate forces fighting around Corinth and Starkville. In 1865, after Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's march through Mississippi destroying all vestiges of Confederate resistance along the way he entered Mobile Bayou and burned all vestiges of Cherbourg plantation which made possible Federal occupation of Shelby County (now Livingston County) without result until1868 when Federal authorities discovered over $100 million worth of cotton stored thereon by Confederates who were able to flee before Sherman's arrival). Fortifications constructed at this time remain standing to this day; they are known as "Sherman's Forts". After Union troops withdrew from Mississippi in 1865 Olive Branch experienced rapid economic development thanks to new railroad construction passing through the area including Interstate 30 which connected Memphis with Gulfport and Jacksonvillemarkets; also many small factories were built throughout Marshall County resulting in a population growth rate greater than 12%. By 1880 Olive Branch had attained its present size with a total population exceeding 10,000 residents within 5 miles of downtown including numerous stores & hotels which led to its nickname "the Cotton Capital of America". In 1898 Governor John Jourdan approved plans for what would become Ole Miss University; however local opposition delayed implementation until 1901 after which enrollment increased rapidly until 1922 when James Meredith established black student enrollment at Ole Miss leading to violence on campus that caused three deaths – oneermanent injury – and several thousand dollars worth of damage (the so-called Meredith Affair). This event has been called one of Reconstruction's most dramatic episodesanticipated problems for years to come but never materialized due to overwhelming white support for Olemiss athletics programs despite protests by students groups such as Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity whose members had boycotted football games at Oxford University because their president refused permission for black students thereto compete). On September 15th 1969 African American Art Student Reginald Denny was killed during peaceful protests against racism on campus following an incident where white students hurled objectsAt him fromSigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brothers duringa game played at Oxford University). As late as 1990s approximately 60%of residents living within 500 feetof downtown reported experiencing some formof discrimination either verbal or physical . On Olive Branch, Mississippi, the first post office was established in 1824. The town was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1853, a school was established in the town and it remains open to this day.
