Olive Branch is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,886 at the 2010 census. The Olive Branch community is named after a tree located on the main square of the town. The first settler in what is now Olive Branch was John Moody who came overland from Kentucky in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Yazoo River and started to grow crops. A post office called Olive Branch was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg cross-country traveled through Hancock County looking for soldiers to join his army during the American Civil War. When he reached Olive Branch, he ordered its citizens to stand down and return home with their families before continuing on his journey southward. The town was platted on May 8, 1865 by Jno Dickson as part of an effort by local businessmen to create more economic opportunity for residents along the riverfront. By 1870, there were 587 residents living in downtown Olive Branch; by 1910 that number had grown to 1,022 people. The cotton gin and other industrial plants that flourished during Reconstruction began shutting down around World War II; however, they reopened after the war as small businesses throughout southern Mississippi continued operations despite being technically illegal under Ulysses S. Grant's Administration policies known as "white supremacy." In 1967-1968 local resident Tommie Hardwick spearheaded an effort to have all low income housing built within walking distance of downtown—a project that virtually tripled olive branch's population within 10 years with no single investment totaling more than $100,000 dollars alone). By 1990 this goal had been accomplished with development of several thousand homes – including 4500 apartments – making it one of Mississippi's most vibrant communities having contributed significantly to both city growth and social stability since then while escaping some negative aspects associated with larger metropolitan areas such as Chicago or New York City where density has led to increased crime rates among minority groups while also exacerbating Inner City Poverty Indexes (among African Americans specifically). Olive Branch is a town in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,772 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Olive Branch was James Herrington, who arrived in 1818 from North Carolina. He built a cabin on the bank of the Yazoo River and named his new community after olive trees he saw growing near by on his travels. The following year, he and two others purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north of present-day Olive Branch from John Dye for $8 per acre. In 1820, they began to build a log cabin called "Herrington's Grove" which served as their home until 1827 when they sold it to Hugh Wills for $5 per acre. In 1830, Andrew Henderson came to live in Olive Branch with his family and started an agricultural business dealing in rice and other crops. Later that same year, Henderson donated 160 acres (60 hectares) of land east of present-day Olive Branch to the townspeople for use as a public square and school campus. The site would eventually be renamed Old Town Square after Henderson's death in 1877. In 1840, Benjamin Fenton moved into what is now Olive Branch from Corinthia with his family and began farming cotton on about 60 acres (25 hectares). By 1850, he had enlarged his farm to over 200 acres (80 hectares). After becoming mayor of Corinthia in 1865 due to strong support from residents thereabouts, Fenton decided to move his wife and children permanently into what would become Olive Branch so that they could enjoy more complete health and safety within easy commuting distance should anything happen during their stay thereabouts should any unfavorable event arise affecting Mississippians elsewhere within the state or country outside thereof – something that did not always happen those days! For many years thereafter – until approximately 1900 – life went on much like it always has done hereabouts! And then things changed abruptly! Mr.. Franklin Dickson bought 100 acres (40 hectares) adjacent both sides of Main Street just south of where today's First Baptist Church stands just after World War II ended as part of an effort by him jointly with several other citizens/businessmen/the Methodist Episcopal Church towards creating a City Park concept which ultimately failed but left us all With That As Our Future!! What A Bit Of Weirdness That Was !!
