Olive Branch was a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is now a ghost town. The first settler in Olive Branch was James W. Garner who arrived in 1821. He and his family built a cabin on the edge of what is now Olive Branch Township. Mrs. Garner's daughter, Sally Garner (1830-1902), married David Ladd and they moved to Olive Branch in 1845. They had six children: three boys and three girls. One girl died young; her mother buried her with the other kids when she became old enough to hold a funeral account but didn't tell anyone about it until after Sally Garner's death because she wanted them to remember their sister "Sally" also! In 1865, General Beauregard made an encampment for Confederate soldiers at what is now Railroad Avenue and ordered Captain Hogg of the 1st Mississippi Infantry Regiment to build a small fortification on the bluff overlooking Highway 3 south of present day Olive Branch Township for use as a staging ground for Confederate troops moving upriver from Cairo into Yazoo County during the Battle of Corinth Bridgehead on November 25th 1865 Captain Hogg responded by building an earthworks fortification called Fort Pickens which still stands today near Railroad Avenue and Highway 3 just inside Present Day Olive Branch Township . The fortifications were used as artillery batteries during the battle and served as an important strategic point between Corinth Bridgehead and Jacksonport Landing where Union troops were landed opposite Fort Pickens . Captain Hogg's fortification has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 In 1870, Captain George Aiken purchased land adjacent to Fort Pickens from Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley . he then built a house known as "Aiken's House" which stood until 1931 when it burned down while being renovated by volunteers using local brick foundry bricks Olive Branch received its first post office in 1903 under name of Gulfport with postmaster Edwin Bicknell serving until 1907 In 1907 Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of Mobile Bay including much of coastal Mississippi so Postmaster Bicknell relocated his office inland within present day Meridian where he continued service until 1915 when he resigned due to health concerns During World War I Postmaster Bicknell enlisted in U.S Army Signal Corps where he rose through ranks becoming Sergeant Major before retiring in 1922 having served over 41 years In 1925 he founded Ole Miss Agricultural College located near Meridian

The Olive Branch Massacre happened on July 4, 1871, when a group of white Confederate soldiers killed nine black men and boys who had been taken prisoner during the Battle of Pleasant Hill.
