Olive Branch is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Olive Branch was founded by General Natchez Trace Olive and his wife, Rebecca Folsom in 1821 as a post office on the Tallahatchie River. The first settler in what is now Olive Branch was Reuben Hinson in 1825. There were no schools or churches until 1830 when Rev. John Witherspoon built a log chapel and taught school for three years before moving on to build his own church on a bluff overlooking the river. Reverend Witherspoon's students also built a house called "Hancock House" which still stands today and provides evidence that early settlers had some sort of education beyond farm work. In 1839, General Nathaniel Pemberton wrote to President Jackson recommending that he move the seat of government from Tuscaloosa to Olive Branch because "the soil hereabouts has been found superior to all other parts of this State." The decision not to move came about because there was already an established government center at Moundville and it would have been difficult for new settlers to get transportation across the river into town so as not to lose their land holdings; instead, Ole Miss became one of Jackson's five counties with its own courthouse and jail facilities. In 1840, general James Aiken arrived with 1,500 men from Georgia who were looking for land north of Mobile Bay where they could establish cotton plantations; they camped around town until August 8 when they marched north under cover of darkness towards Will Rogers' plantation where they destroyed all food supplies and took hostages before finally surrendering on September 5th after weeks of fighting including several engagements near present-day Mount Pleasant (near Laurel). In 1840 General Aiken sent Colonel Edward Sledge with 4 artillery pieces and 10 cavalrymen westward along the Tallahatchie River towards Meridian but he only reached within two miles (3 km) of town when he discovered that there were no roads leading there so he turned back home emptyhanded. On October 6th Aiken sent another detachment consisting of Colonel Joshua Trimble with 100 riflemen northwestward towards Meridian but again encountered difficulties getting overland so upon reaching Meridian he ordered Trimble's unit back east without any further incident - an event which later earned him national fame as one of America's most heroic commanders during the Seminole Wars. After campaigns against both Native Americans and slaveholders throughout Alabama through 1786 Aiken resigned his commission in November 1787 due to health problems but continued military service until his death at age 60 year old in December 1793 after battle against Creek Indians at Pensacola Bayou just south of Jacksonville Landing). After many years olred Branch became connected with Jackson through railroads which brought goods upriver from Memphis & Nashville markets; housing began popping up along Railroad Street beginning in the late 1800s although development never proceeded very rapidly due mainly to lack o finance & interest from developers who saw olive Branch primarily as an agricultural community used mainly for produce production rather than an economic center capable ol hosting large scale industry or attracting businesses civic events etc.; nevertheless some notable buildings such as Cannery Row/Old First Baptist Church/Marine Park Elementary School still stand today despite significant damage sustained during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which caused extensive flooding within village limits particularly within Old Second Baptist Church which saw water levels reach 50 feet (15 m) inside its sanctuary! With population growth rates remaining relatively flat during recent decades olive Branch has seen steady job growth especially thanks largely to efforts by local businesses such as Gadsden Mall located just outside village boundaries while developments such as Cherokee Crossing -Opelika Shopping Center are currently underway adjacent unto Village limits providing much needed retail space specifically targeting Olive Branch residents within walking distance!
The Battle of Olive Branch was fought on November 3, 1864, during the Civil War. Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee were pursuing Union forces under General John C. Pemberton southward from Corinth, Mississippi. The Confederates attacked Pemberton's force with artillery and infantry, but were unsuccessful in achieving significant casualties. After an hour of fighting, Confederate forces retreated northeastward towards Memphis, Tennessee.
