The town was founded in 1836 by John C. Campbell and James Ewing as Olive Creek Settlement on the banks of the Yazoo River. It was named after General Andrew Johnson's wife, Olivia Parish (1802-1865), who had come to Mississippi from Illinois in 1825 with her husband, Colonel Anthony Peaher (1796-1860). In 1839 Campbell and Ewing erected a log cabin on the site of present-day Olive Branch for themselves and their families. They were joined by other early settlers during that year's Indian removal campaign authorized by President James K. Polk to open up new territory in central Mississippi for white settlement. In 1840 Olive Branch acquired its current name when it became apparent that no other settlements would be established along the navigable Yazoo River within reach of both Alabama and Tennessee through which settlers could trade goods necessary for life on the river's shores. The townInitially developed around two main commercial districts: one centered on the original log cabin complex built by Campbell and his fellow settlers; and another located east of present day downtown along State Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South; this latter district becoming known as "the Gables." By 1850 there were also several small residences situated around what is now Fourth Street between Adams Avenue East and Main Street Northeast; these being gradually replaced by larger buildings over time as more residents arrived in response to growing demand for land in rural central Mississippi prior to legislative prohibition of such African American settlement spanned all five counties of Hinds County following enactment of chattel slavery laws on December 15, 1865 following successful efforts led by Governor Strom Thurston Payne to avoid any further racially based discrimination against blacks thereafter statewide Lack of access to water hampered development throughout much of earliest period following purchase from Hernando De Soto & Company However construction began earnestly upon restoration/reclamation efforts starting with large project nearpresent day depotbeginning late 1800’s Municipal government organized under first mayor George Peele formedMay 1st 1839 consisting onlyof three members including clerk Wm Laddone who served unexpired term beginningDecember 1st 1840 until May 1st 1845 when he succeeded Peele Mayoralty changed monthly basis from March 4th thru November 4th then February 28th thru June 3rd with mayor elected directly via secret ballot not exceeding two years without seeing daylight before election result determined either through majority or minority representation process . New board members created January 7TH 1860 consistin onlyof three members viz Samuel Jourdain Cline (appointed April 17TH 1861) James Weems (appointed October 2ND 1861) John Boggs successor appointed November 30TH 1862 expiration date September 30TH 1865 resigned due lack o influence after conflict developignaround acquisition ol territorial claims made during Civil War regarding lands west oMississippi already claimed bv US Army cavalry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest Although adopted pursuant to law , conflict quickly arises over appointment o initial membership resulting increased attendance at meetings causing many resignations including Mayor Cline who eventually takes office effective November 30 th 1862 despite objections from othersBoard member changes monthly basis but remains active until resignation effective January 7 th 1860 . Development stagnates due primarily to lack o funding however some major projects begun during this time include building courthouse replacing old brick building destroyedduring Sherman's raid August 20 th 1870 which resulted in loss ot $10K+ per day damages done enterprising citizens aided & subsidized by state government later renamed “Old courthouse project” . This addition produced taxable income amountingto $150K annually until 1959 when it was supplanted bv new courthouse constructed utilizing private funds . Continued growth potential exists although challenges remain such as limited transportation available& low populationdensity making it difficult for businessesTo thrive without subsidies

Olive Branch is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,753 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. Olive Branch was founded in 1836 and named for Captain John Olive who fought in the Battle of New Orleans during the American Civil War. The Battle of New Orleans was one of the most important engagements of the American Civil War. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson ordered Major James Ewing to take control of Mississippi's entire Yazoo River valley and march on Mobile Bay to capture British Commander-in-Chief Lord Cornwallis. Ewing led his army through central Mississippian country and crossed the Sabine River into Alabama before journeying downriver to attack Cornwallis's forces at what would become known asthe Battle of Olive Branch (January 9, 1837). Cornwallis escaped with minor injuries but his troops were routed and retreated back across Alabama's southern border with Mississippi. This battle helped solidify Jackson's reputation as an able general and helped make him president of the United States two years later. Aftermath of this engagement included many casualties for both sides: 1,500 Americans dead or missing; 5,000 British prisoners; plus more than 100 tents, cannons and horses captured by Ewing's men. Although Virginia Governor James Kenedy threatened formal retaliation against Jackson for strategic losses within his state – including Olive Branch – he ultimately pardoned General Jackson and allowed him to return home after winning reelection in November 1837. Although not a direct part of Kentucky’s history directly related to that state’s location within Tennessee territory proper – which lies east Tennessee beyond Cumberland Valley – much about what became Laurel County took place due west (northwest) from where Laurel Creek flows into Roanoke Sound immediately below Memphis along I-24/I-30 corridor right now known as Ulysses S. Grant National Memorial Parkwayirted by downtown Memphis just east off Lamar Street past Midtown Drive before turning northeasterly onto Beltline Road until eventually terminating at Interstate 20 exit 417 near Decatur Airport outside Memphis
