After reaching Mobile Bay, they disembarked and took passage on shoreboats to cross Mobile River to Tuscaloosa Landing where they set up camp for two days before continuing their journey northward along Alabama's western coast On arriving at Moundville (present day Roswell), Jackson discovered that his own father had been born there about three years earlier and he intended to visit him soon aftersettling down permanently within America Jackson then determined that he would first tour what would become known as mid-South America before settling permanently here himself He ordered all his men westward into Indian Territory - present day Arkansas - leading them directly into conflict with local Native American tribes This forced Jackson to return home late one night after raiding an encampment near Tupelo south of Moundville Upon his return, he learned that much of what he had found while touring South America had been destroyed by friendly Apache warriors during this time frame
