The town of Olive Branch was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Butler as a station on the Santa Fe Railroad. The town grew quickly and in 1845, it became a separate municipality under the name of Olive Branch and Mills. In 1868, the town was renamed for General Andrew Johnson after he became President of the United States. Today, Olive Branch is an agricultural center with production of cotton, corn and soybeans. It also has a small manufacturing sector that produces electronic products and other small items such as plastics and textiles. The city's downtown district is home to several restaurants and stores including Macy's Department Store, JCPenney & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company dealership, Bank One Corporation branch and Regions Bank branch

Olive Branch is a small town located in southern Mississippi. It was founded in 1836 and has been a part of the state of Mississippi since it was created. The town is named after an oak tree that stands outside the town limits. The first settler in Olive Branch was Hiram Soane, who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the Pearl River. From this cabin, he began to trade with surrounding villages and eventually became one of the most influential men in early Olive Branch. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel George Pickens as the new commander for invading Mississippi Territory. Colonel Pickens, who had earlier served under Jackson during his aborted attempt to take Savannah, Georgia in 1825, decided to invade Mississippi Territory because he felt that Jackson should be given control over all of Louisiana instead of being divided between Spain and France. When news spread that Commodore John Farragut had defeated Admiral James Banks at Mobile Bay on July 4th,1846 (the Battle of New Orleans), General Pickens ordered his forces into action against Jackson’s forces at Corinth, Mississippi on October 17th. After weeks of fighting, General Pickens’ forces were able to drive back Jackson’s advance and capture Corinth on November 3rd. With Corinth captured, General Pickens turned his attention towardsJackson’s supply depot at Meridian...Olive Branch lay just east of Meridian along Pearl River..When pickets from Meridian ran into trouble near Olive Branch late one night around February 9th 1850 following reports that $10,000 worth Confederate munitions were being stored there by Major Samuel Bledsoe as part of an army buildup for an upcoming invasion by General Robert E Lee (later known as Confederate general), Union troops emerged from their hiding places and fired upon them killing five officers and wounding several others before withdrawing without further loss...Bledsoe then abandoned his supplies at Meridian and moved them instead to what is now Harrisonburg,...The battle opened with shots from above as Union soldiers Bohannon estimated 300-350 rebels armed with pistols & shotguns made their way upriver towards where they thought we might be located only to find us entrenched behind our well-fortified walls 200 yards away - massed artillery could fire upon them without hitting anything...After about 30 minutes stand off ensued shooting continued until about 1:00 A M when Union gunners went onto shore sunk two boats filled with torpedoes each taking out one end both entrances open firing causing great destruction amongst those inside disabling many including some Generals stores Ammunition etc.......At 2:00 A M another body notice appeared from river bank bearing evidence damage done not long before...It soon became clear that torpedoes had taken out both ends entrance hatch leading down into boat resulting in water flooding inside Boat followed by Explosion creating tremendous noise & muzzle flash showinating for miles Aftermath: A total value amounting to $19,-1000 was lost within 25 minutes after launch including munitions already aboard Boat...... This event marked perhaps one time per month when Confederates managed to inflict significant damage upon Union troops or ships while underway..... By destroying these boats Rebel commanders ensured they never again could use similar devices against Government vessels while afloat....... In short this attack represents a major victory for Confederates over Union troops

The society's goal was to persuade whites in the area to stop enslaving African Americans. The association also organized local church services and preached against racial discrimination. In 1827, the Olive Branch Baptist Church began preaching sermons on God's plan for America. This sermon led to the creation of the first black church in America, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
