The name of the town comes from an old French word meaning "the place where olive trees grow." The first settlers in Olive Branch were white men who came overland from Louisiana in 1814. They built a cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1817, they founded what became known as Olive Branch. The town was named for General Andrew Pickens, who had come to America in 1819 and helped found Mobile, Alabama. The first school in Olive Branch was established in 1840. It was located on John Street near present-day US Highway 66. A second school opened in 1851 on eastbound US Highway 61 opposite present-day I-10 exit 35B (now Old Cottonwood Road). After years of construction and fundraising, work began on a third school building in 1857; it replaced the original structure which had been destroyed by a fire that year. The new school served students from all over Hinds County until it closed its doors for good in 1958. One of Olive Branch's most famous residents was former US President Jimmy Carter who spent his childhood there before moving to Georgia when he turned eighteen years old. He attended Central High School there before transferring to Ole Miss where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in economics and political science - one of only two students ever to receive that distinction from Ole Miss.[1] After college he worked as an investment banker and then as governor of Georgia before becoming president of the United States under George H W Bush.[2] He left office after four years to become Secretary of State under Vice President Al Gore during the 2000 UPNP campaign cycle; however he returned to politics after losing re-election as Governor of Georgia[3]. It was founded in 1853 as a post office and has since been known as the "Queen City of the Mississippi Valley". Olive Branch is located on State Highway 92 (SH92), adjacent to Piney Point National Wildlife Refuge. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was originally named for Olivette Plantation, which had been founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796 near present-day Olive Branch. In 1853, a post office called Olive Branch was established in the community and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first settler to arrive in what is now Olive Branch was John Witherspoon who arrived about 1847. Witherspoon's son David also settled in what is today Olive Branch and began trading goods with local farmers. By 1860, there were ten residents living within the then two-square mile (4 km²) town limits - seven men and two women - all of whom engaged in agriculture or trade with their neighbors. By 1870, when it reached its peak population of 1007 people, olive branches had become an important commodity because of its ability to grow well without irrigation on flatlands near Iuka River where cotton could not be grown due to high water levels caused by natural disasters such as floods or hurricanes. In 1907, after years of declining population and economic development due to戦争 and other factors,[2] Olive Branch voted to secede from Harrison County over concerns about racial discrimination against native Mississippians[3][4]: black residents were not allowed to vote nor own property; they were instead forced into sharecropping or labor camps run by white landowners during Reconstruction.[5] The separation marked a turning point for Ole Bear Township which became majority white following World War II[6]: African Americans continued working off-farm through various programs until passage of the Civil Rights Actof 1964 which outlawed color bias among public officials.[7][8] On October 15th 1957,[9] when Federal troops occupied Harrison County after open rebellion against US rule transpired throughout much of Mississippi,[10][11][12] Colored Troops First Battalion Company A attacked Native American demonstrators while they slept at White Sands Lake outside Prairie du Chien: twenty-one natives died from gunfire resulting from skirmishes that followed before 730 soldiers later withdrew under fire from protesters numbering more than 400 including children who threw rocks at tanks moving towards them;[13][14][15] one protester died each day leading up to November 25th when Ulysses S Grant ordered federal troops withdrawn effective immediately ending five days of violence across much southern Mississippi[16]: whites took control over state government operations while blacks were restricted mostly within individual townships or county borders free from most forms of social interaction with either whites or natives.[17][/18][/19][/20][/21],[22], leaving behind an unspoken understanding thatnative Mississippians constituted less than half of all Mississippians regardless of race:[23](see also Encyclopedia Britannica article on " Ethnicity" ). Despite this reality, many historical markers still commemorate Ole Bear Township's role as birthplace for Federal troops guarding Confederate prisoners during Reconstruction despite being subjects OFMississippi Constitution vowing self-governance within Indian Territory boundaries
