Olive Branch is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1836 as a small community on the banks of the Niger River. The first post office was established in Olive Branch in 1837. In 1841, Olive Branch became a county seat and remained so until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee visited Ole Branch and recommended that it be named for General Robert Ewing Battle (1821-1872), one of his Lieutenants-at-Arms during the American Civil War and later an important official in Reconstruction South Carolina. Battle had served as colonel of militia forces from 1849 to 1861 and then brigadier general from 1862 to 1865; he had also been wounded at First Manassas Junction on April 14, 1861. Battle's request for the name was granted and Olive Branch became Battle's plantation town located near his plantations outside of Mobile, Alabama where he resided until his death three years later at age seventy-eight. It is interesting to note that nearly all roads leading into or out of battlefront areas were named after Confederate generals: Orange Avenue (or "Old Fort Road"), Sailor Street (Route 9 south), Petticoat Lane (John Hunt Morgan Boulevard east of US 97), etcetera - this reflects not only Battle's military accomplishments but also racial differentiation within Confederate society whereby most men who fought for slavery were black while most men who fought against it were white Anglo Saxon Protestants like Battle himself - another indication that African Americans did not comprise an integral part of Confederate society until after their emancipation following the American Revolution.).
