The severe Depression hit Ocean Springs hard in the 1930s, but it bounced back with strong business development during World War II and afterwards. During World War II, the US Navy set up a shipyard at Bay Minette which produced warships for America's allies. This helped to revive local economy; however, post-war economic decline followed suit until 2007 when oil prices began to rise internationally which led to increased job opportunities and more investment in local businesses
On July 4, 1814, a group of boats and people from the town of Ocean Springs landed on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico. They named the island "Island Springs" in honor of their new home. The town grew quickly around the island and soon began to be known as one of the most thriving towns on the Gulf Coast. In 1827, Island Springs was renamed Jacksonville after Jacksonville, Florida became an official United States city. In 1898, Island Springs was incorporated as a city by order of President James K. Polk. It continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of over 50,000 people. By 1945, however, the city had shrunk to less than 10,000 residents due to economic decline and migration away from the area due to hostilities in Europe. Today Island Springs struggles with poverty and crime rates that are above those found in nearby Jackson or Meridian counties. However, some residents have attempted to revive their once vibrant community by creating more affordable housing developments and reviving local businesses.
