Ocean Springs is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,412 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name comes from an 1836 US military post named "Osprey" after HMS Osprey, a British warship that fought in the Mexican–American War and was captained by Commodore John D. Sloat. The first recorded target shooting in Ocean Springs took place on July 21st, 1836 when Captain James Waddell set up eleven shotguns aboard HMS "Britannia" to shoot targets for entertainment purposes off Point de la Ville (now known as Atlantic Beach). As America became more interested in hunting animals during this time period, so too did target shooters begin using firearms for sport outside of war and militancy conflicts. In 1851 Ocean Springs had its own rifle club and held their first national match with twenty nine guns against twelve clubs from Mobile Bayou and Baldwin County. By 1860 handguns were being used instead of rifles for target shooting competitions and the club changed their name to the American Rifle Association (ARA) because they wanted to promote handgun use beyond just rifle competition By 1861 pistols were also being used as projectiles for artillery practice by Naval Engineers stationed at Port Hudson Barracks on Biloxi Island which led to the establishment of a Navy pistolnery school there in 1863 which eventually produced Marines who served alongside Union forces during the Civil War In 1871 ARA organized a state championship match against Gulfport Municipal Club with thirty nine guns against fifteen clubs from Jackson County In 1889 ARA merged into NRA creating one unified force for all shotgun sports across America
