Ocean Springs, Mississippi was founded in 1817 by the wives of Captain John Ross and his men when they were stranded on the coast after their ship, the Independence, ran into trouble. The town was named for a salt water creek that flows through it. It began as a small trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1821, Ocean Springs became the capital of what is now Jackson County. By 1830, it had become a major port on the Tennessee River. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), Ocean Springs played an important role in helping to rebuild America following its civil war. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln designated Ocean Springs as part of the so-called "Three Forks" region including Vicksburg and Memphis which would be under military rule until American troops could take over. From 1870-1910, Ocean Springs experienced rapid growth due to its importance as a shipping point for cotton shipments from Mississippi Valley plantations and its location at one of several commercial airports in Jackson County. However, because of droughts and other factors such as construction of Interstate 20 (which bypassed Ocean Springs) during this time period,[1] local businesses failed and many residents left for better opportunities elsewhere in Mississippi or East Alabama.[2] The population decreased rapidly from 1930 to 1970[3], primarily due to natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes which struck Mississippi during that time period; however, some residents have returned since then[4]. In recent years,[5], there has been renewed interest in Ocean Springs due to its unique history and attractions. Many people who live in Gulfport or Biloxi find Atlantic Beach more interesting than anything else located within easy walking distance of either city center.[6] There are also numerous restaurants and bars located throughout downtown which offer excellent food options without having to go out into the heart of town where prices are higher than elsewhere around Gulfport or Biloxi. One downside associated with this increasing popularity is that not every person who wants to visit Ocean Springs knows about it; thus making research difficult if desired information is not available locally prior to arrival.[7] Some tourists who want something more rustic or isolated may prefer nearby towns like Asbury Park or Oxford while others may prefer Gulfport overall due to its infrastructure being much greater than any other town nearby.[8] Although still smaller than most neighboring cities,[9][10], both Biloxi[11][12][13][14][15][16]and Gulfport have seen significant economic development over recent decades largely because they share many similarities with their larger neighbor: They are all coastal communities with large ports serving both local businesses and international travelers alike; they each have universities/universities’ extension services such as graduate schools;they each have ample stores open late night; they each have multiple casinos (Gulfport has two);[17],[18],[19]; etc.;Thus much potential exists for growth even outsideOfofthe immediate area surrounding OceanSprings proper

It served as the community's library until it closed in 1978. In 1957, ocean springs voters approved a $4 million bond issue to improve local infrastructure and beautify the town. The money was used to build a new courthouse, add a park and pay for renovations to the old one. The current incarnation of Ocean Springs is home to about 30 businesses and 2,000 residents. It is also known for its annual "Ocean Spring Festival," which attracts hundreds of people from throughout Mississippi and neighboring states each year.
