Ocean Springs is a small town in Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gulf Coast region and sits on the Alabama-Mississippi border. It is known for its cotton plantations and seafood processing plants, as well as its annual Cotton Festival. Ocean Springs was founded by Yankees who came to Mississippi from New York in 1821 to find employment on the soil of what was then a frontier state. The town's name comes from an offshore island that still exists in the community today: "Ocean" refers to the sound made by waves crashing against shorelines when high tide reaches their destination, and "Springs" refers to springs that flow through underground aquifers beneath town. In 1902, Ocean Springs became one of ninety-six towns in Mississippi that were consolidated into Jackson County under act of Congress called the Squatter's Bill. The first settlers arrived in Ocean Springs during the 1830s looking for land grant opportunities following Andrew Jackson's victory over Federal forces at homecoming; many had been driven out of Tennessee after his defeat there three years earlier. By 1836, only thirteen families remained in what would eventually become Ocean Springs; most had left due to difficulties obtaining title deeds orlanding on an uninhabited island near present day Swansea (now withinJackson County).
