This event is called "the turning point" in the War for Southern Independence and helped lead to Union victory. In 1865, as part of Reconstruction efforts following the Civil War, Ocean Springs became one of the first cities in Mississippi to be integrated into society as black citizens began to arrive from surrounding counties. The city experienced some prosperity during this time but also faced many challenges such as difficult economic times and riots that occurred sporadically throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s
