In 1861, Union soldiers burned down part of Beale's plantation complex in retaliation for Confederate attacks on Union forces near Ocean Springs. As a result of this event, many African Americans fled to nearby Tupelo and other communities in order to rebuild their lives. The loss of these resources negatively impacted Ocean springs' economy; however, it nonetheless continued to grow into the late 19th century until it reached its current size. In 1991, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Ocean Springs; however, most businesses continued operations even during the damage period. Some residents chose to return after reconstruction began; however, others opted not to rebuild at all due to concerns about how they would be able to support themselves while their homes were still standing without state or federal assistance. After more than 20 years of growth and development within the city limits only modest progress has been made towards restoring critical infrastructure including streets and sidewalks; however some areas have seen significant revitalization including new restaurants and shops along State Street In 2012-2013 Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage throughout much parts of southern Mississippi but did not affect Ocean Springs directly though some neighborhoods around North State Street sustained major flooding which hindered business activity Overthe weekend there have been several reports that there may be further damage as water continues receding
