In 1820 a group led by Andrew Jackson set out from Jackson's Tennessee plantation plantation Yazoo Landing for what would become Ocean Springs when they discovered large areas available for sale along the Pearl River delta where navigation improved with able engineers such as Charles Goodnight and Robert Treat Davis In 1830 African American John Hogg built a cotton gin on leased land off Old Meridian Street which became known as Hogg's Harbor before becoming known as Ocean Springs after him because it lay between two branches of Pearl River which made it easy for ships to navigate In 1840 Isaac Shriver moved from Savannah, Georgia with his family to live among Choctaw Indians living around Biloxi Bayou He started farming hereabouts with corn weaned pigs then switched over to raising beef animals Some time later Shriver also began shipping saltwater shrimp from these waters directly back into Savannah via barges AfterAndrew Jackson died young at age 47 while fighting against still more powerful Southern forces at Pea Ridge Plantation near Memphis Arkansas Shriver took control over Sunnyside Plantation which prospered until 1861 when Union General Philip Sheridan burned it down during his Raid on Gulfport Naval Yard considered one of history's most significant military successes When Andrew Jackson was finally buried nearby Shiver bought property east side Of Pearl River Olga Stoneman remarried US Senator James Fenton In 1865 she sold property across river from current site She monument now stands next door
