The town was founded by General James Kenedy on a salt well near present-day Atlantic Boulevard and Jefferson Street in 1825. There were no permanent settlers until 1839 when Colonel John Fenton purchased land from Mr. Lamar Keyes for $1,000 cash. In 1850, General Andrew Jackson established a military post here known as Fort Phillips with cannons made from white oak logs which had been collected along the Yazoo River Valley south of Biloxi, Mississippi In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell invaded Mississippi and besieged Columbia before retreating towards Memphis with all their supplies including artillery and prisoners). On December 12th 1861 General Nathan Bedford Forrest set up his headquarters at Fort Phillips after routing Union troops at Quitman Field outside Oxford, Alabama On January 1st 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9066 ordering all Federal forces in the South to leave immediately without instructions as to what would happen to those who did not comply Fort Phillips was abandoned on January 3rd 1865 after Union troops destroyed most of its cannons Returning back eastward towards New Orleans on February 14th 1865 (the day following Battle of Mobile), Confederate forces found Fort Phillips abandoned once again and burned it down that same night The final stop on Confederate's march from Mobile to Richmond occurred here - within sight of both Biloxi and Gulfport - where they burned much equipment before withdrawing across the state line into Tennessee on March 9th 1865 .Shortly afterwards Union troops sacked this unoccupied fortification which lay waste for nearly two years while various groups attempted rehabilitation or reuse This event also marks one of only two times an American military outpost has been destroyed completely in history ; both occasions taking place during World War II when Ft Polk was destroyed by Japanese forces

After the American Civil War, Mississippi became a state in 1868. It was originally part of Alabama. In 1998, it gained its own congressional delegation and has been a U.S. state since 1959.
