The city of Ocean Springs, Mississippi was founded in 1821 by Captain John St. John, who named it for the extensive salt water current that flows through the town. The first permanent settler in Ocean Springs was Nathan Hale, a farmer from New Hampshire. Hale's farm became the nucleus of what is now Ocean Springs. The first post office in Ocean Springs was established in 1825 and was called "Nathan Hale." In 1828, General Andrew Jackson visited the town and ordered all public buildings to be destroyed except for courthouse and jail. As a result of this visit, many people began to flee to Gulfport before Jackson's troops moved into the town on April 9th, 1829. During the 1830s and 1840s, there were many events that took place in Ocean Springs. One such event was when John Coker married Miss Ella Hammond on October 15th, 1840 at her home on Third Street. Prior to this wedding, Mrs. Hammond had been living with her parents until she could marry someone she wanted to marry - which would have been allowed under Mississippi law at that time. After their marriage, Coker set up shop as a grocer in what is now downtown Ocean Springs while Miss Hammond continued to work as a domestic servant for local families until 1850 when she became Mrs. John Stroud Stroud (married name). In 1850-1851 Mr./Mrs.( marrying name) built themselves a home on Lavaca Street between Second and Third Streets which they called "The Oaks." This house remains today one of the most significant structures in downtown OceanSprings because it served as both their residences during their years as married citizens as well as their business address starting from 1861-1868 when they bought property across First Street from Drury & Sons Auctioneers dealership which later became known as The Venetian Hotel . In 1865 United States Senator James Kenedy arrived in Atlantic City with his family for vacation only to find out that Hurricane Abraham had struck near Mobile Bay early that morning killing over 100 people including many high ranking officers such as Commodore David Dixon who masterminded much of Donald Steuart’s successful blockade running campaign against CSS Sumter during 1861-1865 . After learning about this tragedy from locals he immediately issued an order prohibiting any ship or vessel carrying goods upriver beyond Pensacola Harbor including vessels owned or chartered by local residents being offloaded or unloaded at any stage other than into Contraband Cove where they would be safe from possible capture by Confederate forces .. Consequently some important businesses around town closed down due to lack of customers during those fateful months especially since merchants relied almost entirely upon river traffic Which slowed considerably given Mobile River’s accession into Union hands following Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House .. Aftermath: Many businesses reopened but tradeeh dropped significantly due competition from new Port Royal Stock Yards built nearby by Confederate authorities California Shipbuilding Company started operations along West Mobile Bay shortly thereafter .... Ultimately Post Office moved back inside original courthouse prior to reopening once again under new Administration effective March 1st 1870 ........... Downtown area still retains its character today despite recent construction projects.."
