Natchez was founded in 1802 by Captain James Wilkinson and his men as a trading post on the Yazoo River. It served as an important military post during the American Civil War and received its current name in 1881 when it became part of Jackson County. Natchez has a rich history that can be seen in its buildings and people. The first settlers to Natchez wereCaptain James Wilkinson and his men who arrived from Kentucky in 1802. The town grew quickly because of its location on the river and its access to goods coming from upriver. By 1823, Natchez had a store, inn, schoolhouse, Mechanic shop, movie theater and several homes. In 1828 Captain Wilkinson built what is now known as Wilkinson Hotel which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Natchez for visitors looking for information about local attractions or just spending time around town. In addition to tourism, another major industry in early Natchez was agriculture which produced crops such as cotton, hogsheads of rice and corn grain necessary for food storage and export.
