Natchez, Mississippi is a small town in the U.S. state of Mississippi that is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles southwest of Mobile, Alabama. As of the 2010 census, its population was 6,895. It is the county seat for Hinds County and home to the Natchez Trace Parkway and several museums. The first Europeans to visit what is now Natchez were French explorers in 1706; they named it Natchitoches because they found a group of villages there growing corn and other crops. Spanish traders also visited in the early 1800s and called it Los Negros (The Blacks). Natchez traces its history back to 1802 when General James Wilkinson founded a trading post here with his brigade under General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. Wilkinson's post lasted until 1814 when he abandoned it because of malaria problems at Biloxi Bayou. A year later, Captain John Pemberton established another post at this site which he called Fort Pemberton (later known as Fort Payne). In 1821 Micah Clarke built a log cabin here while serving as captain of HMS "Ohio" during the American Revolution. In 1824 Nathaniel Banks founded an agricultural college here which became State Normal School in 1829 and then State University of Mississippi in 1897 before becoming Ole Miss University in 1976. The town got its name from General Tom Thumb who reported being attacked by Indians near this location on November 3, 1796 while exploring what would become Hinds County on his way north from New Orleans via Mobile Bayou flows into Mobile Bayou through Natchez Landing where he camped for two nights before continuing his expedition southward Thumb's attack made news around world as did Indian activity further south along Mobile Bayou including a battle fought between British regulars and Creek warriors at Tallapoosa Island August 9, 1797 during Governor Alexander Stephens' failed effort to make peace with Spain This marks one time both United States military forces have engaged indigenous people – though not always positively – leading to increased concern among white Americans about possible interaction with Native nations potentially inherent within their newly acquired territories Many local historians credit Nathaniel Banks withStarting America's long economic journey down South

Natchez, Mississippi is a city located in the southwestern corner of Mississippi. The population was 2,925 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and the home of Jackson State University. Natchez has been a center for American history since its founding by settlers in 1812. The community was named after General Andrew Jackson, who helped drive Spanish colonists out of Louisiana in 1814. The first white residents arrived in Natchez in 1812, and it soon became a center for local commerce and cultural activity. In 1818, General Jackson moved his army from Georgia to help drive out Spanish colonists from Louisiana. He founded what would become Natchez as a stop on his travels. American Indians also played an important role in early Natchez life; many of the early settlers were Creek people displaced by Indian Removal policy during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1836, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at Natchez Harbor; this led to significant destruction and loss of life among both sides. The town quickly recovered, however, and regained its status as one of America's most important cotton ports during the Civil War era. After the war, Natchez experienced rapid growth as millions of Americans relocated to southern Mississippi during Reconstruction period (1868-1913). This period saw major changes throughout Mississippi: African Americans began to gain strength politically and economically through black power movements; whites abandoned their traditional values and lifestyles in favor of new Jim Crow policies; nativism spread throughout Southern United States under conditions conducive to racial integration;and poverty increased across Mississippian working classes due to government assistance programs such as Aid To Families With Dependent Children (AFDC). Natchez was founded in 1821 by the Choctaw people. The town grew rapidly after a system of slave trading and purchase opened up in the area. In 1830, Natchez became the capital of Mississippi. It was here that Mississippi ratified its first constitution and began to develop as a state.
