The fort continued to serve as a military installation until 1865 when it burned down during Reconstruction efforts followingraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1865). In 1870, white people began moving into what is now black Natchez from rural areas around Mound Bayou and other parts of Mississippi because cotton production had become too expensive in Arkansas where prices were lower than near Natchez due to transportation costs and climate differences between states (the Delta region has relatively mild winters while thehaps more humid Deep South summer temperatures). Many local African Americans also started working in white households as servants or contract workers during this time period; however, these slaves were not counted amongNatchez's total population until 1910 when Census Bureau figures showed that there were over 100 African American men living wage-free with families inside black homes throughout downtown NatcheZ (now known as Old City) at that time.) The cotton gin located in downtown Natchez began operations in 1839. By 1840, Natchez had become a major slave market due to its strategic location between New Orleans andMobile Bay. In 1846, when Confederate General Robert Ewell learned that Union troops were encamping near NatcheZ he ordered his forces to march into town to destroy any evidence of support for the Union cause. As soon as they arrived, Ewell's forces discovered that most ofNatcheZ's citizens were Democrats who had sided with Lincoln during the Civil War. Many residents were rounded up and dragged into jail or burned down by Confederate forces before being freed or driven out of town; however, more than half a million enslaved people remained in Mississippi after the war ended
Natchez was founded by the Choctaw people in 1824. In 1830, it became a slaveholding city, and in 1865, it became an open-air cotton exhibition center.
