He decided to attack East Memphis instead because he believed it would be less risky to launch an all-out assault on all Confederate forces throughout Mississippi than attacking one small town at a time. At first, planters throughout Mississippi complied with Braxton Bragg's orders; however, after learning about his intentions, many began to resist his authority. This resistance led to bloody fighting that lasted weeks before ultimately resulting in Bragg's surrender at Meridian on April 12th 1865.
