In 1831, General Jackson designated this small town – then known as Natchez – as his new headquarters after he won re-election as president on November 3rd that year. At this point, Natchez had only 10 residents and no infrastructure beyond a few wooden buildings used for storage and trading goods with nearby settlements such as Vicksburg and Biloxi. However, within months of GeneralJackson’s inauguration, NatcheZ had become an important center for cotton production due to its location at the headwaters of the Red River providing access to excellent soil and water resources (including Lake Pontchartrain). This early success led to increased development opportunities for NatcheZ over time as more families decided to settle here (even though prices for slaves kept rising throughout much of America)). By 1840, however, local merchants began experiencing financial difficulties caused largely by low demand for their products resulting in lower profits than they could generate outside of NatcheZ framework; this contributed significantly to social unrest during these difficult times (see:The Great Slave Revolt of 1850-1851).
