Moss Point is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1848 by John James Audubon as a Methodist Episcopal chapel on the banks of the Bayou Teche. Moss Point became a commercial center for cotton farming and shipping during the early 20th century. It declined during World War II as American production shifted to other locations, but regained its former stature after the war as an agricultural and fishing town. Today, Moss Point is known for its wide variety of arts and cultural activities, including music festivals and theater productions.

Moss Point is home to the University of Mississippi and its athletic program which includes football, basketball, baseball and tennis teams. Moss Point was founded by Isaacs Moss in 1853 as a trading post for his farmstead on Hwy 59 between what are now Starkville and Gulfport. In 1887 the post office was moved to Moss Point from Gulfport because of fire dangers in that community. In 1906 the school system was organized with two schools-East High School (now East Middle School) and West High School-and oneseminary/church school called Trinity Baptist Church which served as both high school and primary education for local residents until it closed in 1973. The first growth took place around downtown where several businesses were built including an insurance company, grocery store, bakery and hardware store before streetcar service arrived in 1907 attracting more people to town center which included a bank (the first), movie theater (the first), druggist (the first) and undertaker (the second). Mills #1 & #2 were built about 1909-1910 using convict labor from nearby Attica Prison who worked on cotton plantations during the Reconstruction Era when black Americans were allowed limited freedom following their release from slavery. The business district around downtown east of State Street started growing again after World War II when many companies relocated here such as Chrysler Corporation (#1), Ford Motor Company (#2), Gulf Refining Company (#3) among others due to availability of available land south of I-10 near present day Hattiesburg. Downtown development continued through the 1990s with new apartment buildings being erected along State Street while other businesses opened up such as Lighthouse Foods Inc., WD Tecnology (#4) among others during this period giving Moss Point its current commercial footprint today with most major employers located inside or adjacent to downtown including several banks/credit unions/markets/gas stations along State Street alone as well as more than 15 restaurants/bars within walking distance since 2007 according to city planning documents filed with the US Department of Housing & Urban Development - making Moss Point one of only two cities in America without any zoning restrictions on restaurant serving alcohol while also allowing large chains like Starbucks Coffee (@$5/$10+) within walking distance while banning fast food restaurants altogether In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place off State Street towards Harbour Town Center but no plans have been announced yet for how this will impact ongoing development east of State Street which remains largely unchanged since 2006 when original subdivision plans were submitted Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture; agricultural products include rice, cornmeal, soybeans, honeydew melons etc., providing jobs for many people throughout much of southern Mississippi outside urban areas like Jackson proper where manufacturing continues although jobs are diminishing overall because imports are increasing . Economic decline began soon after World War II with shrinking acres available for cultivation; however drastic reductions also occurred during desegregation efforts leading to mass migration northward into city limits resulting in loss or displacementof almost all white farming familiessouthwest side mars Hill

The town grew rapidly due to the cotton trade and its location on the Yazoo River. In 1840, Moss Point was renamed for Major General John J. Moss who fought in the Mexican-American War.
