Moss Point is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Moss Point is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi–Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Moss Point were Germans who arrived in 1867. A post office called Moss Point was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. In 1901, a group of Scotsmen known as the MacDonalds settled down in what is now Moss Point. They operated a mill and bakery there for many years before selling their business to a local farmer, Wm. Hetzel. In 1916, General John J. Pershing ordered all American troops out of Europe and sent them to fight World War I based on the belief that they would be needed back home shortly thereafter; however, few returned from war and most Americans returned home before the end of hostilities that year. Wm-Hetzel decided to stay put and continue running his business even though war had ended; however, he didn't re-open his mill until 1947 due to economic conditions then prevailing at the time (the mills were closed during prohibition). During World War II, Moss Point was occupied by Japanese forces during the Battle of Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 when USS " Enterprise" opened fire on shore installations near where present-day Memorial Park stands (this action led to Hawaii's only atomic bombing). The town's only resident casualties were two soldiers killed while garrisoning an ammunition dump outside town limits; other than this no damage or Casualties occurred within city limits throughout conflict which lasted nearly three weeks ending with Japan's surrender unconditionally on February 9th 1945 after days of hard fighting including more than 100 engagements inside city limits). Joint military operations ceased around 8pm local time on Sunday night following unconditional surrender terms being received from Emperor Hirohito aboard aircraft carrier "Haru".
