Moss Point, Mississippi is a small town located in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi. The name "Moss Point" comes from the word "moss" which means to cover up or hide. As a result, the name Moss Point was given to the village because it was difficult for anyone to see. The first settlers in Moss Point were white men from Georgia who arrived in 1807. By 1830, many African Americans had moved into Moss Point and began working on plantations owned by white families. African Americans working on plantations were not allowed to own firearms and were required to carry around large amounts of ammunition for protection. Although black people could not own firearms, they did have access to other forms of weaponry such as shotguns and handguns. In 1857, a group of white men from Alabama decided to move into Moss Point and start a plantation. This new group of settlers wanted African Americans working on their property so they purchased rifles and pistols for their employees. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his troops to attack an American military encampment near Meridian, Mississippi. A number of black soldiers were killed or wounded during the battle and as a result, many black people in Moss Point decided that they needed weapons too protect themselves from Confederate aggression. When Union forces arrived at Meridian in November 1865, they discovered that most of the black residents had fled southward before the battle started. Only a few hundred black people remained in MossPoint at this point; most of them managed to flee northward before Union troops arrived thereabouts. However, due to Confederate snipers firing at Ulysses S Grant’s army during the battle (which resulted in some loss of life), many residents returning home after fleeing south learned about what had happened during the battle and formed militias seeking revenge against Union forces later that year . The fact that so few blacks living within sight of Union troops allowed for any open warfare between them and white settlers led some historians believe this community may have been peaceful until then . In 1870-71 several houses burned down due to firewood being stored inside them without proper storage solutions; this event is thought be one reason why so few Africans continued living within sightof Union forces throughout Reconstruction America

The economy of Moss Point is based largely on agriculture which includes raising chickens, pigs, cattle, cottonseed oil production, corn ethanol production and other agricultural products such as soybeans and wheat. Other industries that have presence here include manufacturing (most notably A&P Supermarket), service sector (such as restaurants and retail), trade (including fishing) and tourism. Moss Point is located about 35 miles south of Jacksonville along Mississippi State Highway 484 on the banks of theMississippi River adjacent to Interstate 10/US 11 exit 34B/exit 278A

Since then, Moss Point has seen modest but steady growth thanks in part to its location within easy reach of both Jackson metropolitan area and major city jobsites such as Starkville for those seeking employment outside their homes or businesses. Today, Moss Point features wide variety of businesses including restaurants, newsstands/cafes/grocery stores, churches/synagogues/mosques- all with local ownership - making it one of largest concentrations of independent businesses in central Mississippi
