Moss Point is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Gulfport and 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Meridian. Moss Point was founded by John Evans in 1854 as a fishing village on an island in the tidal river system that forms the border between Alabama and Mississippi. By 1860, Evans had developed mossy roofs, planks for decks, cotton gin facilities, and other infrastructure to support more than 1,000 fishermen who rented land from white farmers around his small town.
