Moss Point, Mississippi is home to the world’s second largest rifle stockyard in the United States. This firearm industry powerhouse has been manufacturing rifles and shotguns since the 18th century, making it one of the most storied firearms industries in history. Moss Point has a rich rifle history that can be traced back to 1785 when Captain John Beal founded Beal’s Rifle Works in present-day Moss Point. The company manufactured muskets and cannons for both Confederate and Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, Captain Beal merged his company with J&R Richards Manufacturing Company to form Richardson & Beal Firearms Corporation. The company continued producing firearms until 1986, when it was sold to Cabela’s Inc. The Richardson & Beal Rifle Yard is located on a tract of land that once belonged to Captains John Beal and James Moseley. The original gun factory was built on what is now known as State Road 371 west of downtown Moss Point. Today, the Richardson & Beall Gunnery Museum offers a unique visitor experience which includes an overlook of the factory complex from where Visitors can watch workers at work on various types of firearms over a period of three hours! The museum also features displays about the history of rifles, shotgunry, ammunition production, and more. During World War II, Moss Point was home to two major military installations: Fort Sanders (now Samford University) and Camp Lewis (now Crossroads College). These locations were used for training ground troops for both service members within America as well as Allied forces fighting in Europe. Additionally, Moss Point hosted several other important facilities such as Air Corps Station Hawkinsville which housed fighter planes during World War II; Naval Weapons Station Gulfport which handled naval warfare supplies; Army Missile School; Navy Shipbuilding Division - Mobile Beach; Central Intelligence Agency Headquarters - Langley Research Center; and more!

The first and most important settlers in Moss Point were the brothers James and Daniel Boone. They arrived in 1814, and soon began to build a cabin on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The town was named for them, Moss Point, after they disembarked from their ship at the mouth of the river. The first post office was established in 1816, and by 1830 there were six stores, four churches, and thirty-six families living in Moss Point. Moss Point grew rapidly during the 1800s because of its location on the Ohio River floodplain. This allowed for big businesses such as cotton plantations to be built here. In addition, boat traffic from Mobile Bay made it an important shipping center during this time. By 1870, Moss Point had a population of over 1,000 people and was home to three churches and twelve schools. However, during World War II many of these businesses were destroyed by fire or bombed by Japanese forces. As a result of this decline in business activity and population growth rates, Moss Point experienced some significant transformations between 1960 and 1990. For example, it became an all-black community in 1960; however its demographics have since changed again with more white residents moving into the area over time.
