Moss Point is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Moss Point was founded in 1836 and named for Captain John A. Moss of the Confederate States Navy. The first white settler in what is now Moss Point was William Hagan. He and his family came overland from Tennessee in 1836, and built a cabin on the bank of the Yazoo River. In 1840 they moved to an area along Bayou Teche that became known as "Moss Landing." In 1847 Rev. James Waddell arrived with his wife and three children to found a Methodist church here. Waddell had come downriver from Mobile after leading an unsuccessful campaign against pro-slavery forces near Memphis. He soon realized that he needed help to build a congregation here, so he sent word to friends back east that he wanted people to move into his new community and start their own churches there as well. They did, and by 1850 moss point had a Methodist church, Baptist church, Presbyterian Church (later Episcopal), Congregational Church (later Congregationalist), African American Methodist Episcopal Zion (AAMEZ) Zion Chapel (now called First Baptist Church), blacksmith shop, schoolhouse and two stores - one run by trustees appointed by the pastor of Moss Landing while another ran by local merchants under the supervision of Mr. Greenlaw who owned property adjoining Moss Landing on which both stores were located In 1862 Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Mississippi; during its occupation most of central Mississippi's cotton plantations were seized or burned out; this destroyed many homes and villages in Jackson County including Moss Point where more than 50% of all settlers were blackened-skinned slaves prior to Union capture in 1865 After Union victory over Confederate forces at Vicksburg in July 1865 most slave owners surrendered their slaves; however some continued resistance until after Reconstruction began when these same former slaveholders sold their slaves back into bondage This freed many blacks who had been captured during the war or born free but remained enslaved because they could not afford freedom or legal documentation Greenlaw organized local commerce within what became known as "the old Confederacy" which functioned much like today's Walmart with few if any regulations governing business practices between whites & blacks following Reconstruction He served terms as mayor & sheriff before dying suddenly at age 67 in 1928 leaving behind an unbroken record of service dating back forty years
