The town was originally called "New Orleans," but the name was changed to Moss Point in honor of General John J. Pershing. The town became an important commercial and shipping center during the early years of the 20th century. In 1915, Moss Point became an official U.S. port and helped grow international trade in the Gulf Coast region. The industry that made Moss Point so successful also contributed to its decline during the Great Depression. However, through investment by local business owners and government support, the community revived and regained its former stature as a major center for commerce and industry during World War II. After the war, Moss Point experienced another period of growth as it expanded into new industries including shipbuilding and plastic manufacturing. However, due to economic conditions in both America and Europe, these businesses eventually failed or were abandoned in the 1970s and 1980s. Moss Point was a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,831 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. Moss Point was founded on November 1, 1892 by J.C. Lovejoy and his brother-in-law A.G. Stephenson as a station on the Yazoo River for shipping salt water fish to Birmingham and other points eastward. Today, Moss Point is home to two shopping malls - one in Biloxi and one in Gulfport - as well as two restaurants and a large bank tower that used to be the tallest building in Mississippi. The original courthouse still stands today (it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina), but most of the downtown has been replaced with office buildings and more retail stores since then. The first settler at Moss Point may have been John Crouch who arrived there around 1796 AD along with his family from Cumberland County, Virginia, via Mobile Bayou. By 1802 AD, Jethro Lovejoy had established himself here as an agriculturalist and trader; he also built a log cabin which served as the first schoolhouse in what is now Moss Point Township (now residents call this structure "Lovejoy's Cabin"). On December 12, 1892 – just three years after Lovejoy's arrival – he erected a wooden frame courthouse near present day Main Street/US 1 south of US 98; it functioned as an administrative center for all of Jackson County until 1895 when it moved to its current location north of I-95 (the Lighthouse Motel). In 1898 AD another pioneer – Prentice Meeks – set up shop hereabouts when he purchased 2 acres northwest of where Main Street meets US 98 on what became known as Meeks' Landing; he would later rename this spot Wharf Island after himself and develop it into an extensive seafood market that remains operative today - albeit under new management during much of recent times (see below). In 1903 Mr. Hosea Beasley bought land southeast of Meeks' Landing from Prentice Meeks; this parcel would become known as Beasley's Harbor which continues to house some commercial activity currently taking place ashore while also providing primary access to offshore navigation through its waters today courtesy of various Commercial Vessels docking there regularly.......
