Moss Point, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,839 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, Moss Point had a population of 3,615. The first gun cases in Moss Point were reported on November 1st 1871 when two men named Waddell and Barron shot an animal with a rifle from a house on High Street. This was the first documented use of firearms in Mississippi and it signaled the beginning of aGun culture in this region. One account claims that Waddell’s father had owned guns before he died and taught his son how to shoot them. Another account has it that one man named Tom bought some rifles from Captain John Denton and then sold them to Waddell for $50 each. In 1872 another man named Hargrave purchased some shotguns from Captain John Denton and then sold them to Waddell for $25 each. On December 3rd 1872, Moss Point residents watched as Major James Aiken fired six shots at an animal while hunting near their home on Elm Street. This event is known as “The Shooting at Elm” because six gunshots were heard by residents before they saw anything happen.
