Moss Point, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 4,906 at the 2010 census. Moss Point is located on the Gulf of Mexico about east of Jackson and west of Hattiesburg. Moss Point has been inhabited for over 100 years. It was first called Fenton and then Moss Landing. The first permanent settler in Moss Point was Abram Rankin who arrived in 1828 with his family from Tennessee. He built a cabin on the beach and named it Rankin's Ford after himself and his father Abram Rankin Sr.. In 1869, pioneer James Wray settled here with his family from Kentucky. They founded Wray's Store which remains an important part of the community today. Wray also donated land to build school buildings in Moss Point which are now used by both local schools and Hattiesburg Central High School. The townspeople were early pioneers in developing cotton farming practices such as irrigation systems and crop rotation so that their crops would not spoil during wetter seasons or during droughts caused by earthquakes or other natural disasters. The first post office was established in 1892, but it was moved to Meridianville later that year because of limited space on the hilltop where it sat. In 1907, William Hinton opened a store here which became one of the most successful small businesses in central Mississippi until its closure by JCPenney around 1990s due to competition from bigger stores across the state line within Alabama and Tennessee. A major fire destroyed much of downtown Moss Point on Christmas Day 1932 when some people lit fireworks while intoxicated following a carol service at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church (). In 1954-55, moss point native Forrest Pogue served as Ulysses S Grant Representative for district 16 (Jackson) in the United States Senate representing Mississippi during Lyndon B Johnson's term as President of America (). Many notable Mississippians attended Pogue's congressional campaign events including future Governors Haley Barbour (of Mobile), Lenny Bruce (of Memphis), Ed Askins (of Tupelo)and Phil Gramm (of Dallas). After leaving Congress he worked as an advertising executive for JCPenney before retiring in 2006 having held that position for 43 years (). In retirement he lived near his childhood home off Highway 494 near Corinth until his death there on July 7th at age 89ia

Moss Point is a small town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Moss Point is located on the Mississippi River and on the edge of a salt marsh. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Area. The community was established in 1892 by John Harker and his brother-in-law, Amos Kendall. The early years of Moss Point were difficult due to its remote location and lack of transportation. However, through hard work and perseverance, the community flourished over time. In 1922, local agriculturalist J.B. Hill opened a grocery store in Moss Point which helped contribute to its growth and prosperity. Over time, many businesses have been built in Moss Point including hospitals (including one that serves as headquarters for healthcare provider Humana Inc.), colleges (including Southern Illinois University Carbondale), an airport (and two nearby military bases), a golf course, and more recently residential developments such as condos and single family homes. Moss Point has always been an important center for cotton production throughout its history; today it remains an important hub for manufacturing as well as agriculture with several major companies headquartered here including Monsanto Co., Honeywell International Inc., Tyson Foods Inc., and Lululemon Athletica Ltd.. There are also numerous small businesses operating within the community that contribute to its vibrancy and economy. Today's residents are proud of their deep rooted history here at MossPoint both before and after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of southern Mississippi in August 2005 - many continue to recount stories from when they first moved here or grew up around here or even attended school or college hereabouts during those dark days... The first white person to live in Moss Point was James Fenton, who arrived in 1839. The town was named for General John Lookout, who had been killed in a skirmish with the Creek Indians. Lookout's widow donated land to the town and built a house on what is now Second Street. In 1854, the United States government leased 1,500 acres of land from the Magnolia Plantation owners near Moss Point for military purposes. The town began to grow rapidly after this announcement and by 1860 it had 10 homes and 100 residents. A post office was established in 1864, and within a few years there were also stores, restaurants, and other businesses. By 1870 Moss Point had a newspaper (the "Moss Point Gazette"), three churches (one Presbyterian, one Methodist, and one Baptist), two schools (one public and one private), a doctor (Dr. John Waddell),and two blacksmiths (John Gist and George White).
