Captain Marshall also built a small fortification at the site to protect his crew and officers from Confederate attacks. His station became known as Fort Marshall after him. The population decline that took place during this time led to most businesses closing or moving away as they could not compete with larger communities such as Mobile or Montgomery City that had adopted more centralized administrations and economies. However, some businesses did remain throughout this period including: Da Vinci's Pizza which left after a fire destroyed their building in 1984; Olde English Furniture which closed in 1990; Bojangles' chicken restaurants which continued operation until 2000; and Jax Paper Company which remained open until 2007 when it merged with another paper company forming Jax Times Newspaper Corporation (JTNC). The growth of technology has played a major role in revitalizing moss point through business expansions such as Applebees restaurant opening up shop inside old JTNC headquarters location starting November 6th 2014; Googleplex opening up shop along State Street just east of Main Street nears main park used for recreation; Waffle House coming online August 2nd 2016 making moss point one of only a few places still open 24/7 across America due to advances in technology.; multiplexes popping up all around town giving residents more choices about where they can watch movies.; moss point gaining notoriety for being home to "Mississippi's First Online Film Festival" (MOF) annually since 2013 showcasing world-class film productions from around the Gulf Coast region

In recent years, however, Moss Point has experienced increasing suburbanization due to rapid economic growth in surrounding municipalities; although it retains some agricultural heritage, much of its commercial activity takes place outside the city limits today.
