Moss Point, Mississippi is a city in Forrest County, Mississippi. The population was 7,405 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Forrest County. Moss Point is located on the Yazoo River and its downtown area is composed of businesses and housing which are concentrated along Broadway Avenue. The first European settlers in what is now Forrest County were French colonists who arrived in 1699 and named their new settlement "Moss Point." In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's Corps of Engineers constructed a ford over the Yazoo River at what is now Moss Point to create an access route for troops opposing British forces during the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly as soldiers and settlers returned home from the war and by 1836 it had a population of 2,500 people. By 1860, Moss Point had become a major whaling port with over 100 vessels anchoring there; however, this trade ceased when commercial shipping began to move through Mobile Bay instead. In 1865, development began on land adjoining present-day Moss Point as a cotton plantation called "Piney Hill". This venture failed due to lack of money and interest from early investors; however, piney hill served as inspiration for later industrial developments in nearby Baldwin City and Gulfport. In 1870s–1880s white supremacists used Moss Point as a training ground for their paramilitary group known as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). One victim of Klan violence was local blacksmith Johnnie Littlejohn who was beaten unconscious outside his business on Preston Street in 1880 before he could be taken into custody by KKK members awaiting trial for forging evidence against white people in a criminal case. Littlejohn's attackers were identified by local law enforcement officials as two men associated with white supremacist David Lane: one wielding an ax while Lane held him back with another man while they battered him until he lay still; both men were apprehended soon after and convicted of second-degree murder without benefit of counsel or parole eligibility under Mississippi state law at that time (the punishment then available at that stage). The incident has been dramatized several times throughout history including most recently HBO's limited series " nod ". Afterward Littlejohn became leader of one branch or affiliate of Confederate Veterans Organization locals also refers to themselves simply as Johnnie Littlejohn Club/ KK Lodge #2 headquartered at 715 E Broadwalk in Gulfport which does not currently have any active members today but still uses mostly same social media handle since 1970s
