However when skirmishers from units commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Earp made contact with Confederate troops near Mount Pleasant they withdrew without engaging their opponents; this action is widely considered to have been the beginning of the Battle of Petersburg,. By 1917 it had become clear that war with Germany was looming and General Fenton ordered his army across Tennessee into Alabama where they encountered Federal forces led by Major General Ulysses S Grant.. On October 20th General Fenton's army reached White Sands Junction east of Chattanooga only to find that Grant's main body had already crossed the Tennessee River and were marching northward toward Knoxville; this event is considered to be one of history's greatest reversals due to strategic blunders on both sides by commanders involved.. Upon learning about this development Fenton decided not to pursue Grant but return home.. In 1919 Moss Point became part-time seat for Jackson County after it was granted within Jackson County proper by an act of the Mississippi Legislature following a referendum held in 1918 voting 93% yes with only 1% no... The population increased rapidly during World War II as many residents enlisted or volunteered for military service) When peace came there were few job opportunities so many people returned home."

The town had been established in 1871 as a farming community named for Captain John Moss of the USS Constitution (the first U.S. warship to cross the Atlantic). By 1938, it had grown to about 1,000 residents and boasted two churches and several businesses. On Monday morning of May 24th, however, an EF2 tornado struck the town with winds speeds up to 160 mph (240 km/h). The tornado caused widespread destruction: homes were shredded by its wind forces; trees were snapped like branches; roofs ripped from buildings; cars overturned; and bodies lay strewn across streets and sidewalks. Most of Moss Point was flattened within minutes of landfall- within 10 minutes most likely- leaving behind an area which measured just 0.5 square miles (1 kilometer²). A few scattered survivors managed to move away from the damage but many more perished or were too injured to leave their homes even when they could. Some local newspapers reported that “as many as seventy percent” of all those killed in Moss Point died due to injuries sustained during or following the storm itself rather than any natural causes such as tornadoes or hurricanes which had devastated other parts of Jackson earlier that day.
Moss Point was founded in 1818 by Capt. James A. Moss and his wife, Martha. The town was named for Colonel John Moss, a native of Northumberland County, England who had come to the United States in 1815. The first settler at Moss Point was Nicholas Deason, who arrived in 1819. In 1830, Captain John Denton established a trading post near the mouth of the Mississippi River at Moss Point. He traded goods with Native American tribes and from here he conducted surveys for the Louisiana Purchase which Ulysses S. Grant made in 1848. In 1870, Captain James Withers settled at Moss Point and built a warehouse and store on what is now Main Street.
