Moss Point was established in 1892 as a small farming community on the banks of the Mobile River. In 1907 it became an incorporated village and soon developed into a commercial center for the region. As cotton production increased in Gulf South Alabama, Moss Point became an important industrial and shipping point; its warehouses were used to store cotton bales before they were unloaded at riverboats. The business district around West Broad Street had two large movie theaters, one of which was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman because he watched movies here often. In 1951, MossPoint merged with neighboring Clearwater to form Clearwater-MossPoint Incorporated; this company continued to operate until 1984 when it merged with Gulfport-Bay Miners Inc., creating Bay Miners Incorporated (BMI). BMI operated various mills and factories in Moss Point until 2000 when it divested itself of its assets into six separate companies: Delta Steel & Manufacturing Co.; Gulf Ports Authority; Highland Mills Inc.; International Paper Company; and Wilmington Shipbuilding Corporation (WSC). In2005 BMI announced that it would sell all its assets to steelmaker American Can Industries for $2 billion. American Can then proceeded to sell off most of these assets within 5 years, ceasing operations in 2006 except for Delta Steel & Manufacturing Co., which continued operations until 2009 as part of WSC’s shipbuilding arm Myron Levesque Marine LLC. Now known as Bethlehem Steel Corp., this company produces parts for ships worldwide under numerous brands including A C I Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd., Hingham Engineering Ltd., NECO Services Ltd., Pascagoula Lumber Co.—the last two being Divisions of Jabilco Group plc.). The city proper covers just over square miles and has a population density of only fifty people per square mile—less than one percent of Jackson's total population! However, owing to its location on the Mobile River between Pensacola Junction and New Orleans Avenue—just outside the limits set by Jackson's zoning ordinance—Moss Point has been able to maintain some degree of self-reliance while becoming increasingly involved with Jackson's social fabric both through volunteerism and government engagement (e.g.: hosting annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony)—allowing it also to become home base for many local businesses such as marketing firms doing advertising across Southeast Asia or international law firms handling cross-border transactions overseas... [it] remains truly unique among Indian summer towns located along major coastal riverside highways."

The town was founded in 1892 by soldiers brought overland from Tennessee to help quench the thirst of Sherman's army during the American Civil War. Moss Point became an incorporated municipality in 1912. The first post office at Moss Point was established on July 1, 1892. The community took its name from General James Forrest's headquarters near Corinth, Tennessee and it is likely that this name derived from a "mossy" bank bottom that can still be found on the banks of the river there. General Forrest used mossy banks as cover to ambush Confederate troops moving downstream for food and water supplies when they penetrated his lines of defense as they tried to cross the river between Corinth and Chattanooga during their march northward through central Mississippi during April-May 1865. As a result of this skirmish, General Forrest gained a reputation as one of America's most successful commanders during the Civil War era while losing no battle and taking more than three times as many men killed or wounded as any other Union general
