The town was founded by a group of white men in 1827 and grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Red River. The town was also known for its pottery and shipbuilding industries. It was laid out in 1837 by the surveyor and mapmaker Joseph G. Brown. It was named for Major John Moss of the U.S. Marines who fought in Haiti during the French Invasion of Haiti in 1915-16 and for General Gouverneur Morris, who negotiated its purchase from France as part of that country's withdrawal from Haitian independence. Moss Point is located at (34.8273257, -862.929873).According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 914 people, 350 households, and 248 families residing in the town; the population density was 593.0 people per square mile (243/km²). There were 367 housing units at an average density of 267.5 per square mile (101/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American; Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2% of all residents

In 1836, Moss Point residents voted to become part of the city of Jackson. At that time, it had a population of about 400 people including 30 African Americans and 10 white citizens. By 1860, Jackson's population had increased to over 5,000 people with Moss Point accounting for only 2% of that number. However, despite this decrease in population size over time, moss point has remained an important community within Jackson through its contributions to education and cultural heritage
