Meridian is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi. It is located on the banks of the Yazoo River and has a population ofaround 9,000 people. The name Meridian was given to it by General James K. Polk after he surveyor-general for the state of Mississippi surveyed the area that now includes Meridian in 1836. The town was founded in 1835 by John Prentice and his brother Isaac Prentice, two men from Cumberland County, Kentucky who had come to America to find a new home. They set up a trading post near present-day downtown Meridian and started to build homes. The first house was built on what is now Elm Street. In 1838, when Meridian became an official town, it had just eight residents. In 1840, Edmund Rice settled in Meridian and began building churches and other buildings that still stands today. He also opened a store which soon became one of the most important commercial institutions in Meridian. rice also donated land for the construction of a courthouse and jail which are still standing today. In 1846, Judge Augustus Bogue arrived in Meridian from Mobile with instructions to help settle the situation between white settlers and African Americans who were living on their property without their permission or compensation. He quickly discovered that there were problems with this type of settlement because many white settlers were not content with having black people living around them without proper respect or obedience to law. This led him to create regulations aimed at solving these issues as well as setting up rules about how blacks could live without causing any trouble on behalf of white settlers
