Meridian is a city in Pearl County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. Meridian was founded by General John C. Caldwell in 1847 and became a town in 1852. It was re-established as a city on July 1, 1959, after it was eliminated from the state list of towns by Act 206 of the Mississippi Legislature. The first settler in Meridian were James Fenton and his wife Sarah who arrived on May 14th, 1847. They built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the river where they remained until October 12th when James went out into the country to get corn for their family. He never returned home and Sarah continued to live with her husband's family until December 11th when she gave birth to their first child, James Aiken Caldwell II (JACK). In 1849 General John Caldwell moved his entire brigade into Meridian from Tupelo to take up arms against Stephens county duringa civil war which had started two years earlier in Alabama

Meridian is a town in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. Meridian was founded on the banks of the Yazoo River in 1819 by General James K. Polk and his army after they retreated from an expedition to take Vicksburg. The town became a railroad junction and grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching its peak population of 50,000 in 1910. However, it declined following World War I and the Great Depression, eventually becoming a small agricultural community again. Recently however, growth has resumed in Meridian as it becomes known for its attractions such as its restaurants and casinos.

In 1868, Meridian was renamed Jackson after President Andrew Johnson. The town continued to grow as a cotton port until the late 1800s when it began to decline because of increasing manufacturing activity in nearby Jackson. In 1960, Meridian incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth thanks to its location on the banks of the river. Today, Meridian is an important cultural and economic center in Mississippi and is home to several universities and museums.
