By 1870, Meridian had a schoolhouse, Methodist Episcopal church (founded in 1870), Masonic Lodge No 4 (founded in 1865), Store & Post Office (established 1856), two hotels (one opened 1889 and one 1886), four stores (four log buildings with H-shaped fronts; all were destroyed by fire except one which reopened in 1895 under new ownership), five blacksmiths (four men and one woman) who converted an old farm into their business headquarters/ forge/ smithy/ woodpile/, fifteen negroes civil service employees who performed various tasks within the community such as picking cotton for local farmers or working on roads or farms outside of town In 1897–98 Hurricane Katrina devastated much of coastal Mississippi but spared Meridian because it was located inland near New Orleans
