The town had an important role in helping to define Mississippi as an American state and as a center of slave trade operations. In addition to its strategic location on the river corridor connecting Spirit Lake with Natchez and Biloxi (both located nearby), Meridian also housed some of America's most important political leaders during this time including James K. Polk III (the future president), Zachary Taylor (the 15th U.S. President), Andrew Johnson (the 36th U.S. President), Salmon Pekar (a congressman from Minnesota who played a key role in designing Reconstruction in America), Thaddeus Stevens (a congressman from Illinois who helped lead passage of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution) and Lucius Clay (who later became Secretary of State). Although Meridian has suffered greatly through history, it remains an important community today with strong ties to both local government and history. For example, many streets in downtown are still named after famous residents or events from Meridian's past such as Main Street which recalls when merchants would walk down that street to buy goods at local stores or Third Street which remembers when slaves worked in mills near town limits until they were taken away into slavery sometime between 1837-1849 according to historian Beverly Graybill’s book “Meridian: A History Illustrated” Despite its struggles throughout history, there have been several initiatives over recent years sponsored by locals in order to help revive downtown businesses and promote heritage tourism attractions like ancient plantations nearby called “The Plantation Experience” or even more recently “Mississippi Delta LivingHistory Museum” that tells stories about everyday life on these islands before they were annexed into Nigeria by oil companies decades ago
Meridian was a small village in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. It was located on the banks of the Ouachita River. The post office at Meridian was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1939.
