Meridian, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 1,587 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north bank of the Pearl River. Meridian is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first settler in Meridian was Amos Robbins and his family who moved to what is now Meridian from Harrison County in 1829. The town name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where two rivers meet." The townsite was platted by Matthias Fenton in 1839, and named for General Andrew Jackson himself because he had visited that region during a survey expedition in 1837-38. In 1871, when it became part of the newly created state of Mississippi, Meridian applied for and received a charter from its governor (a process known as secession). A year later, due to funding cuts by President Ulysses S. Grant's Reconstruction Administration, Meridian closed its schools and closed its post office; however, it reopened under new management soon after. In 1880-81 some residents proposed building a cotton gin on what is now State Street in downtown Meridian; however this plan met with opposition from local farmers who were fearful that the gin would increase cotton production while reducing their profits thereby hurting them economically. Meridian's Centennial Year Celebration took place on July 4th and 5th of 1987 which included exhibits about life and culture then and now as well as features about streetlights turn off during national darkness symbolizing how much progress has been made since then...We are proud to live here today with all that our city has brought to us over these 100 years!

Meridian, Mississippi is a small town in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. It was first settled in the 1830s by white farmers and their African slaves. The town was originally named "New Madrid," but it was renamed Meridian in 1906 after the nearby city of Meridian, Alabama. The population of Meridian was 1,819 at the 2010 census. The town has a history that goes back to when it was first settled by white farmers and their African slaves. The name "New Madrid" was derived from an area northeast of Meridian called New Madrid County, which came to be known as Meridian after the city of that name in Alabama. In 1834, William Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of modern-day Meridian for $2 per acre ($10 per hectare). This land included what is now the heart of the town - a series of long ridges extending southeast from downtown into farmlands that had been acquired since early nineteenth century. Fenton named his purchase "New Madrid." He also built a sawmill on this tract and began milling corn, wheat and other crops on his property until 1840 when he sold it to John Dickson for $2 per acre ($10 per hectare). In 1851, Dickson donated all or part of his holdings within what are today Joplin Street and Third Street SW #1 block east of downtown to the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). This donation preserved much evidence associated with Old Nashville - including slave quarters near present day Central Park Avenue SW - as well as donations made by Methodists throughout Smith County to support MEC functions during this time period; among these were furnishings such as pews used at First Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church) northwest corner Third Street SW #3 across from Woodward's Drug Store (later Wise Drug store), now operated as several bars located on Third Street SE between I-55/I-64 exit ramps southbound and northwest corner NW side streets SE between Second Avenue SE and I-610 exit ramps eastbound; pews recently restored at First Baptist Church today date back to c. 1850s when Methodists took over leadership here following split with Presbyterians following American Civil War Today's downtown area spans encompass parts bounded by Fourth Street NW/Northeast Boulevard NE; Fifth Streets NW/Northeast Boulevard NE; Sixth Streets NW/Northeast Boulevard NE; Seventh Streets NW/Northeast Boulevard NE - making it one block wide grid on three levels: ground level just below Fourth StreetNW while Sixth & Seventh StreetsNW run aboveground parallel with Fourth StreeetNW & Northeastern BlvdNE only two stories high Overall street width = Oneblock
