Meridian, Mississippi is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 603 at the 2010 census. Meridian is the county seat and home of the Harrison County Courthouse. A post office called Meridian was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1907. The town was platted in 1882 by J.W. Thornton as part of a larger area that included present-day Greenwood and Clearwater townships and parts of Bayou Teche and Laclede counties. The original name for Meridian was "Cleveland", but this name was changed to "Meridian" after General James K. Polk's visit to the area on December 1, 1885. The first store opened in Meridian in 1882 by J.W. Thornton (who also named the town). A cotton gin was built soon after by John Deere & Co.. In 1909, an electric streetlight system replaced an old hand-operated system that had been used for many years until it broke down one evening during a storm; when pedestrians could no longer see under the light posts they began to fall into traffic intersections with dangerous results! The first schoolhouse in Meridian opened its doors on October 15, 1883 with nine students; it served as both a private school (grades 1-8) and a public school from 1886 to 1889 before being moved to what is now the courthouse building where it remains today (along with other public buildings erected between 1886 and 1907). After hostilities ended things slowly resumed pretty much how they had been prior to war except for some additions like electricity being added back into various neighborhoods throughout 1919 along with prohibition making things less harmful… however during prohibition days you couldn't even get your hands on beer so everything kinda paled next To social clubs/bars alternative lifestyles started becoming more popular among younger people instead Of traditional roles such as working or playing music At leastvisually anywayMERIDIAN stayed pretty much unchanged through all these changes until about 1970 when major maintenance/repair job went ahead inside courthouseBegan causing problems again like roofs falling off chimneys etc…. finally City Council decided early last centuryTo tear down entire courthouse complex & replace it With A park? Which didn't happen until recently….. Finally we are back where we once belonged….. Although government services have since been relocated elsewhere within townElection day shenanigans still take place here every year culminatingWith Brawl On The Plaza Meridian has experienced many changes over its centuries - beginning with its incorporation as a township in 1882 followed by growth as a city through annexation into Harrison County during World War I before shrinking size following World War II when fewer munitions manufacturing jobs occurred nearby
