Meridian is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Meridian was established in 1852. The town plat was filed in 1853 and the first house to be built there was log cabin #2 on the banks of the Soldier's River. In 1865 new Orleans Bridge replaced an earlier bridge which had been destroyed by Union troops during the American Civil War. At that time Meridian had a population of only 100 people. On October 15, 1870, Meridian became one of six towns comprising Jackson County when it was created from portions of Lauderdale and Pike counties. In 1907 US Route 99 (now Interstate 55) crossed through Meridian from west to east providing access to Memphis, Tennessee from northward. The town developed along I-55 as it became more developed with shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses popping up throughout the years; however some older buildings still remain standing downtown including the original courthouse which burned down in 1978 but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2006 using federal dollars under a program known as DoD Gateway Renewal

Meridian is a city in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,964 at the 2010 census. Meridian is located on the Yazoo River and is part of the Memphis–MS-Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. It straddles both banks of the river. The first permanent settler in Meridian was Abram Hines, who arrived in 1799. By 1810, there were 11 families living in Meridian with a total of six acres (2 hectares). In 1821, Edmund Ruffin built one of the first brick buildings in Meridian. The town grew rapidly after Methodists founded a school and chapel here in 1829. In 1830, General Benjamin Butler visited Meridian and ordered all white men to leave by his order or be driven out by force. A mob burned down Ruffin's building and drove him from town; he moved to Natchez four years later. In 1840, two brothers named John Pemberton bought 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Meridian on the edge of what is now downtown for $5 per acre ($ / km²). They set up a plantation called "Natchez Plantation". The Pembertons were among the earliest white farmers west of Mobile Bayou and became known as "the Father Christmases" because they donated many gifts to local churches during their time as settlers there. One such gift was an oven made from 100 logs that could cook 350 pounds (175 kilograms) of food at once . After several years working on their new farmstead, Pemberton's sons sold it to John Davenport for $10 per acre ($ / km²) in 1846. Davenport began developing it into what is now downtownMeridian when he purchased it from Pemberton's sonSamuel Davenport Jr..Davenport had come to Mississippi Territory as one of its original legislators during Reconstruction following the American Civil War . He served as governor general during Reconstruction before moving back north to become headmaster at Tuskegee Institute until his death in 1903."
