The United States acquired Meridian in 1814, when it was part of Jackson County, Mississippi. The city was founded on December 6, 1818 by James K. Polk and others as the territorial capital of Mississippi Territory. In 1821, the capital moved to Jacksonville and remained there until it was moved to Meridian in 1824. The population of Meridian peaked at over 100,000 in 1830 but decreased to about 60,000 by 1860. It has since increased again to around 100,000 people as of 2018.
