In 2007 Meridian was chosen as one of fifty places in America that "made a significant impact" during their time (those Places were determined by reader nominations). Meridian has also been selected as one of Mississippi's ten "cultural treasures."
Meridian was founded on July 4, 1819, by James Fenton and his brother John. It became a town in 1827. Meridian was the seat of government for Jackson County from 1829 to 1840. The county courthouse is still in use today.
