Meridian, Mississippi is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi. The population was 8,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Biloxi and it is the county seat for Marshall County. Meridian was founded on December 12, 1871 by J.W.Bennett and others as a town in what is now Livingston Parish. On January 3, 1907, Meridian became anindependent municipality under the name of Meridian City. The city was renamed to its current name on May 5, 1998 by then-Mayor Donnie Ladd with reference to Spanish heritage in the community and history as one of America's earliest slaveholding ports. The early history of Meridian can be traced back to 1821 when Frenchmen who had come down river from Illinois set up a trading post at what is now known as Fort St Philip Island in present day Meridian Beach Township (now part of Jackson County). This trading post operated until 1839 when it was abandoned because of English competition from Liverpool traders operating out of that port. In 1840 John Gregg established himself at what is now called Point Clear Landing on the Natchez River about four miles northeast of today's downtown Meridian due north of where he built his first cotton gin some time later (the point where state Routes 10 & 90 intersect). At this location he took possessionof land which had been undiscovered since the time before Louisiana Purchase when France ceded all their North American territory including present-day Mississippi to Great Britain through Treaty Of Paris following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in1815 after months long war against American forces led by Ulysses Skelton/William Clark Jr./George Washington Stephens etc.. In addition to Point Clear Landing Gregg also acquired other properties around what are now downtown Meridian including parts of West Side Place and East Side Place near today's BP gas station; Old Indian landing; Griswold Landing; Kingsmill Landing; Muddy Creek landing; Alligator Cove; bayou de la Pedra plantation named Bayou de la Grita after José Gomez Basco who served asGovernor Of Louisiana From 1797 Through 1800.; they also drove off certain native Chippewa Indians living along these waterways thus achieving control over much area eastward from Baton Rouge into present day Alabama and southward into present day Georgia etc..
