Bullets in Meridian, Mississippi date back to the Civil War. In 1861, General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to march on Meridian and pillage the city. The Union forces were met with fierce resistance, and many civilians were killed or wounded. As a result of the battle, much of downtown Meridian was destroyed, and bullet holes can still be seen in some of the buildings today. Since then, bullets have played an important role in Meridian’s history. One such event took place on July 4th, 1921 when a group of men attacked a local grocery store with pistols and shotguns. Twenty-one people were killed and seventy-eight others were injured as a result of the attack. This event helped lead to passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968 which banned most handguns in the United States.

Smith as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1838 which forced many Native Americans to leave their homes in present-day Meridian and other southeastern Mississippian counties for reservations in Arkansas and Missouri. The first white settler arrived in what is now Meridian on May 6, 1852 by wagon train from Iowa City. They named their new community "Meridian" after General James Fenton's column that crossed the Mississippi River at that location on its way to Kansas City. Meridian grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location as a crossing point for several US rivers and its natural resources such as timber, coal and oil shale. By 1907 it had reached 10,000 residents; however during World War I it declined because munitions production increased outside the town limits due to wartime munitions shortages caused by America's entry into war against Great Britain. In 1920 Meridian became part of Gulfport when Gulfport was created from two smaller towns - Acworth (later known as Delta) to the north and Bay St Louis (later known as Biloxi) to the south - following a relocation order issued by President Warren G Harding ordering all American Indian communities east of Interstate 20 be relocated except those located in Texas or Oklahoma which were exempted under treaty terms Brady v Hearn et al.. In 1927 Meridian annexed part of neighboring Pascagoula Township along with Amite Parish providing ∞ square miles (2/3 square kilometers). This annexation increased its population size from 10,000 to 25,000 within 15 years After World War II ended Garrison Planters did not want black people living near white people so they started segregation policies called "Jim Crow Laws". This policy continued until 1964 when Loving v divided Tennessee made all former American Indian Reservations property ownership open to African Americans who could purchase land without restriction under state law although some restrictions still applied such as voting rights which were only given to whites until 1967 when Loving v gave African Americans full citizenship rights through state law despite continuing Jim Crow Laws enforced by local police forces throughout much of Mississippi

The use of bullets became more widespread in 1847 when Captain James Cook discovered new islands off Australasia while exploring the region for England. The town growth accelerated during the 1830s when rice and cotton farming became popular in the region. By 1840, Meridian had a population of 1,500 people. In 1851, Meridian's first school opened; it taught students from local farms and homes. The town's population reached 5,000 by 1860. By 1870, Meridian had become an important transportation hub on the Yazoo River due to its location at the junction of two major road routes. As cotton production declined throughout Mississippi in the early 20th century, Meridian gradually lost its importance as a commercial center. In 1938, when Meridian was incorporated as a city under state law, it had a population of only 6 residents. However, over the next few decades it experienced significant growth thanks to its status as an agricultural center and support from city officials and developers who saw meridian as an opportunity to develop new businesses and residences within walking distance of downtown. In 1984–85 (the late 1970s through early 1980s), MERIDIAN HISTORY FESTIVAL was held in downtown MERIDIAN for 3 days each year with more than 25 vendors selling historical items such as books on American culture or African American history from historically black colleges/universities
